Could you be a teeth whitening addict? From the Dental Team of Sumter

Drs. Vincent and Capers Lee know that people want to look and feel great, and at a time when a set of sparkling teeth might mean the difference between getting a job, more and more folks are opting to try and whiten teeth themselves. The problem is, they're doing it too much and begin complaining about irritation and bleeding gums, excessive teeth sensitivity and translucent teeth.

At the Dental Team of Sumter, we are proud of offer the latest in in-office whitening, including Zoom!, a professional teeth whitening treatment that gets your teeth an average of eight shades whiter — in just one hour. The treatment is safe, simple, and relaxing! Plus, Zoom! is championed by dentists and patients as a pain-free process.

We also have in-home whitening treatments, including teeth whitening trays, teeth-whitening strips, paint-on teeth whitening and whitening toothpaste. Lastly, our friends at WebMD have written a helpful article on teeth whitening addiction, and we encourage you to give it a read if you suspect you may have a teeth whitening addiction.

The benefits of smiling, from the Dental Team of Sumter

Great news to report this week! People with big, happy smiles may actually live longer than those who don’t, according to a recent study conducted at Wayne State University in Michigan.

Drs. Vincent and Capers Lee know that positive emotion has been linked to both physical and mental health, but researchers at the university did something interesting: they used information from the Baseball Register to look at close-up smiles of 230 players who began their baseball careers prior to 1950 by studying their smile intensity (wide smile, no smile or partial smile).

The researchers then took into account other factors associated with life longevity, such as body mass index, career length and, believe it or not, college attendance. They found that players who weren't smiling died at the average age of 72.9 years. Players with partial smiles lived to be 75. Those with big, wide smiles, however, lived on average to be 79.9 years old!

Our take-away from the new study? Smile now, smile often and you might just live longer! Have you perfected your smile by visiting the Dental Team of Sumter lately? If not, give us a call and have a great week!
